Liquid lawn fertilizer is forgiving on burn and easy to apply, but a little technique is the difference between an even, deep green and a streaky, scorched mess. Here is the step-by-step on how to apply it with a hose-end sprayer, get the rate right, and avoid the few mistakes that cause problems.
Picking which liquid to apply first? See our best liquid lawn fertilizer guide.
Step 1: mow and prep
Apply to a dry, recently mowed lawn. A fresh cut gives the spray clean access to the blades, and a dry surface means the product is not diluted or washed off by standing water. Clear toys and furniture so you can walk an even pattern.
Step 2: feed in the cool of the day
Spray in early morning or evening, ideally under 80 degrees. Feeding in the heat of the day is the single most common way people scorch an otherwise gentle liquid, especially with a high-nitrogen formula. Cool and calm is the goal.
Step 3: use the sprayer and overlap your passes
Most liquid lawn fertilizers, including the Simple Lawn Solutions Advanced 16-4-8 we use as the example here, come with a hose-end sprayer attached that meters the concentrate as you go. Connect the hose, set it to spray, and walk at a steady pace with each pass slightly overlapping the last. Striping almost always comes from uneven coverage, not the product.
Step 4: water it in (with one exception)
Most macro feeds, the 16-4-8, 28-0-0, 15-0-15, and 3-18-18 types, benefit from a light watering after application to move the nutrients to the roots. The exception is foliar iron: leave it on the blade for a few hours before any water so the leaf can absorb the color. Always check the product label.
Step 5: get the rate right
Liquids are easy to over-apply, and more is not better. Follow the label, and to translate that into ounces for your specific lawn, run it through the fertilizer calculator. Because a liquid feed lasts two to four weeks, plan on a lighter application every few weeks rather than one heavy hit.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you apply liquid lawn fertilizer? Attach the hose-end sprayer, apply to a dry, recently mowed lawn in the cool of the day, walk overlapping passes for even coverage, and water in lightly afterward for most feeds.
- Does liquid lawn fertilizer need to be watered in? Most macro feeds do, with a light watering to move nutrients to the roots. Foliar iron is the exception and should sit on the blade for a few hours first.
- What temperature is too hot to apply liquid fertilizer? Avoid applying much above 80 degrees or in the heat of the day, since that is when burn risk is highest. Early morning or evening is best.
- How often can you apply liquid fertilizer? Every two to four weeks during active growth. Liquids feed faster but for a shorter window than slow-release granular.
