Mulch depth, bags, and cubic yards

Mulch bags vs cubic yards

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. That is 14 of the 2 cu ft bags, or 9 of the 3 cu ft bags. Past a yard or two, get a bulk delivery quote before you start hauling bags.

Bags round up to the next whole bag. A 2 inch layer takes two thirds of these numbers, a 4 inch layer a third more.

How deep to mulch

Two to four inches. Not a volcano.

Penn State Extension says a 2 to 4 inch layer of organic mulch and no more. Use less where the soil drains poorly. Topping up an old bed? Measure what is already there and only add the difference.

  • Pull mulch 3 to 5 inches back from young trees and 8 to 10 inches back from mature trees, per Penn State Extension. Bark piled against the trunk is the mulch volcano.
  • University of Illinois Extension gives the same 2 to 4 inches for well-drained sites and says keep mulch at least 4 inches from the trunk.
  • Measuring a bed: length times width for rectangles. Split an L-shaped bed into two rectangles and add them with the Add another bed button.

Frequently asked questions

How much mulch do I need for 100 square feet?

At 3 inches deep, 25 cubic feet, which is 0.93 cubic yards. That is 13 bags at 2 cu ft or 9 bags at 3 cu ft. At 2 inches you need two thirds of that, and at 4 inches a third more.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so about 14 bags at 2 cu ft (13.5, rounded up) or 9 bags at 3 cu ft. Check the bag before you buy. The size is printed on the front.

How deep should mulch be?

Two to four inches. Penn State Extension says a 2 to 4 inch layer of organic mulch and no more, and less where the soil drains poorly. University of Illinois Extension gives the same range for well-drained sites.

How far should mulch stay from a tree trunk?

Penn State Extension says pull it 3 to 5 inches back from young trees and 8 to 10 inches back from mature trees. University of Illinois Extension says at least 4 inches. Mulch piled up against the bark is the mulch volcano to avoid.

How much does a yard of mulch cover?

About 162 square feet at 2 inches, 108 square feet at 3 inches, and 81 square feet at 4 inches. That is 27 cubic feet spread at your depth.

Can I use this for pine straw?

Not for a bale count. Pine straw sells by the bale, and bale sizes vary a lot. NC State Extension puts one bale at about 35 square feet, while an NC State county office says a large 40 pound bale covers about 100 square feet at 2 inches. Ask the seller what their bale covers, then divide your square footage by it.

Does rubber mulch work the same way?

The volume math is the same. Rubber mulch sells in smaller bags, so pick it in the calculator and it counts 0.8 and 1.5 cu ft bags instead of 2 and 3 cu ft.
