Why the damage happens, and why it all shows up in one week
Voles are herbivores that spend their lives in a corridor a couple of inches tall. They cut a network of surface runways through grass, thatch, and leaf litter, keep the vegetation in those runways clipped short, and connect the runways with small burrow openings. UC IPM describes the animal as 5 to 8 inches long including the tail, with a compact heavy body, short legs, small eyes, and partially hidden ears. That build is the whole story. A vole is not made to shovel soil out of the way like a mole or a gopher, so it works at the grass line instead and leaves no spoil pile. One caveat on species: University of Missouri Extension notes that meadow and prairie voles are the ones that build these surface runways, while pine voles keep their runway system underground, so a pine vole problem will not draw you a map on the lawn.
Winter is when the lawn pays for it. Snow is cover. Under a snowpack a vole can feed in the open, day or night, with nothing overhead to catch it, so it works the same runways for months and grazes the grass down. Then the snow melts and the whole network appears in a couple of days, which is why so many people think something happened overnight in April. It did not. It happened all winter.
The reproductive math is why a quiet yard turns loud. UC IPM reports females maturing in 35 to 40 days and producing 5 to 10 litters a year of 3 to 6 young, with individual voles seldom living past 12 months. UNL Extension puts density anywhere from 10 to 250 voles per acre depending on the year. Populations also run in multi-year cycles: roughly every 3 to 6 years according to UC IPM, every 3 to 5 according to UMN Extension. A bad vole spring often means you are simply standing in a peak year.
What actually works, and what does not
Start with the thing every extension source leads on: take away the cover. Voles need dense vegetation to survive predators. Keep the grass mowed short into fall, clear weeds and tall grass along fences and bed edges, thin heavy mulch, and keep a clear zone around young trunks. UC IPM suggests keeping a four foot diameter circle around young trees free of vegetation. It is unglamorous, and it is the highest leverage thing you can do.
Second, exclusion for the plants that actually matter. Hardware cloth or plastic cylinders around trunks stop girdling, and UC IPM says to bury the bottom of a trunk cylinder 4 to 6 inches below the soil surface. Its fencing spec, which is a different measure for ringing a whole planting, is quarter inch or smaller mesh standing at least 12 inches above ground with the bottom edge buried 6 to 10 inches. UNL Extension adds that a trunk guard has to top out above the snow depth you expect, because voles tunnel through snow and gnaw as high as the snow lets them reach.
Third, traps. Ordinary mouse snap traps set perpendicular to the runway with the trigger sitting in the trail, baited with apple or a peanut butter and oatmeal mix, are the standard extension recommendation. UC IPM notes this is a numbers game and suggests at least a dozen traps for a small garden, and UNL Extension suggests two to three per runway or hole. Cover each trap so pets, kids, and birds cannot reach it.
Now the honest part. Repellents are weak. UC IPM calls their efficacy questionable and their use often not practical. UNL Extension notes thiram and capsaicin products are registered for ornamentals but are relatively expensive, give only short term protection, and lose effectiveness in winter when food is scarce. Nothing in these sources supports vibrating stakes or ultrasonic devices. Fumigants do not work either, because UC IPM points out the burrow system is shallow with numerous open holes and the gas simply escapes. As for toxicants, be careful what you read. UC IPM states zinc phosphide is the only toxicant available for residential situations in California and that it is restricted use, meaning a licensed applicator. UNL Extension classifies zinc phosphide and chlorophacinone as restricted use in Nebraska while warfarin is a general use pesticide, and UMN Extension says most pesticides recommended for voles are restricted and can only be used by certified applicators, in bait stations. The legal picture is genuinely state by state. Check your own state's pesticide regulations before you buy anything, and read the label, because the label is the law. Finally, most lawn damage does not need any of this: UMN Extension says spring lawn damage from voles is rarely permanent.
How do you identify voles?
- Narrow surface trails roughly 1 to 2 inches wide with the grass clipped short right down to the runway floor
- A criss-crossing maze of trails rather than one straight line, often looping around shrub beds and lawn edges
- Small round holes opening into the runways, an inch or two across, with no soil piled around them
- No raised ridges and no fresh dirt mounds anywhere along the trail
- Tiny droppings and short clipped grass stems scattered in the runway floor
- Chewed bark at the base of young trees or shrubs, with irregular gnaw marks at various angles near ground level

How do you check for voles?
Look for 1-2 inch wide worn pathways through the grass. Place an apple slice in the runway, cover it with an upturned pot or a propped shingle, and check after 24 hours: gnaw marks mean the runway is still active.
None of the extension sources set a numeric action threshold for a home lawn, so treat any number quoted to you as a threshold with suspicion. What extensions give you instead is an activity index. University of Missouri Extension describes the apple sign test: prop a one foot square shingle a few inches off the ground over a runway at about 15 foot intervals, let voles get used to it for about 5 days, put a half inch cube of apple under each shingle, and check after 24 hours to see whether it was eaten. Missouri developed that protocol for commercial orchards and records each station as simply plus or minus, so it is a where-are-they map rather than a score, and Missouri recommends running it in fall and spring. Penn State Extension uses a simpler version of the same apple check to find hot spots and the trees most at risk. In a lawn it answers one question: are these runways still in use, or are they leftovers from last winter.
